Recipe Reading Challenge

Help students build one of the most important skills they need before their first cooking lab with Recipe Reading Challenge: Can You Decode a Recipe?

Designed for middle and high school FACS, Foods & Nutrition, Culinary Arts, and introductory Food Science classes, this ready-to-print activity teaches students how to read an entire recipe before they begin cooking.

Using a Chocolate Chip Muffins recipe, students practice identifying the yield, ingredients, equipment, oven temperature, cooking time, measurement abbreviations, and important cooking terms such as preheat and fold.

Students then become Recipe Detectives, answering questions and solving realistic kitchen situations involving measuring tools, preheating, following directions, and doubling a recipe from 12 to 24 muffins.

Includes:

  • Complete student-friendly recipe
  • Recipe-reading comprehension activity
  • Practical kitchen scenarios
  • Recipe-doubling practice
  • Student reflection
  • Complete teacher answer key

Perfect for the first week of class or before the first cooking lab. Suggested completion time: 20–30 minutes.
